What is online counselling?

Online counselling is talking therapy delivered over secure video (most commonly Zoom) or phone, instead of in a therapy room. The therapeutic relationship is the same — only the medium changes. For most adults, online counselling is just as effective as in-person therapy and considerably more flexible.

Is online counselling actually effective?

Yes. A substantial body of research — including studies endorsed by the BACP and NHS — shows that online therapy is as effective as face-to-face counselling for common issues such as anxiety, depression and stress. Many clients find it easier to be open from the comfort of their own space.

How much does online counselling cost in the UK?

My standard fee is £60 per 50-minute session, or £55 for ongoing weekly clients. A block of six is £300 (saving £30). A small number of reduced-fee slots are available — please ask. There are no joining fees or hidden costs.

Is it confidential?

Yes. What we discuss stays between us, with the rare exceptions all BACP-registered counsellors are required to share (such as a serious risk of harm). I use encrypted notes, a secure private Zoom account and GDPR-compliant systems. We'll go through this clearly together in the first session.

How do I choose the right therapist?

The single biggest predictor of therapy working well is how safe and understood you feel with your therapist. Read about my approach, then book a free 15-minute call. If we're not the right fit, I'd rather help you find someone who is.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes — a free, no-pressure 15-minute introductory call by Zoom or phone. It's a chance to share a little about what's going on and ask anything you'd like to know.

How long does counselling take?

It varies. Some people find 6–8 sessions enough to work through a specific issue; others appreciate longer-term, open-ended work. We review together every six sessions to make sure the work is still useful to you.

Can I have counselling if I'm already seeing my GP or taking medication?

Absolutely. Counselling often works well alongside support from your GP or medication. With your permission, I'm happy to liaise with other professionals involved in your care.

What's the difference between counselling, therapy and psychotherapy?

In practice, the terms are often used interchangeably. As an integrative counsellor I draw on several approaches — person-centred, CBT-informed, relational and somatic — and tailor the work to you.

I'm in crisis — is counselling the right place to start?

If you're in immediate danger, please call 999, NHS 111 (option 2), or Samaritans on 116 123 (free, 24/7). I offer planned, ongoing counselling rather than crisis support, but I can help you think about what longer-term help might look like once things are stable.

What's the difference between online counselling and a mental-health app?

Mental health apps can be useful for tracking mood or guided exercises, but they're not a substitute for a confidential relationship with a qualified therapist. Online counselling gives you a real person to think out loud with — someone who listens for what you're not saying, as well as what you are.

Will it feel strange to do therapy on a screen?

For the first few minutes, sometimes. Most people forget the screen is there within ten minutes — and many find video makes it easier to open up, because you're in your own space. We can also use phone sessions if camera-on feels too much.

Do you work with men as well as women?

Yes — I work with adults of any gender. Men are very welcome and make up a meaningful part of my practice.

Can I use my private health insurance?

I'm not currently registered with private health insurers, so sessions are paid directly. If this changes, I'll update this page.

What if I cry, get angry, or go blank?

All of that is welcome. Therapy is one of the few rooms where you don't have to hold it together — and where going blank is just as informative as having lots to say.

Do you work with couples?

Not at the moment — I offer one-to-one counselling only. I'm happy to recommend couples-trained therapists if that's what you need.

Do you offer evening or weekend sessions?

Yes. I have a small number of evening slots during the week and some Saturday slots. These get booked up quickly — please ask.

I live outside the UK — can we still work together?

+

I'm only insured to work with clients resident in the UK at the time of our sessions. If you're temporarily abroad during ongoing work, we can usually continue; please flag it in advance so I can confirm.
